The voltage of lightning discharge is as high as several hundred kilovolts or even hundreds of millions of volts, and the current generated varies from tens of kiloamperes to hundreds of kiloamperes. Lightning strike will cause damage to the electrical control, communication and mechanical components of wind turbine, such as blades.

為預防雷擊需做如下措施，在葉尖預埋導體網，通過機艙上高處位置放置避雷針，機艙與塔架具備良好的導電特性，在基礎施工過程當中，沿地基安裝通到一米地下的位置，預埋以降低接地電阻阻值，或者采用多根導電體垂直打入深層底下，接地電阻阻值需小于10歐姆。采用屏蔽層或者光電轉換系統，對通信遠傳系統進行保護，采用隔離原理的電源和變壓器。

不僅雷擊會損壞風電機組，電網不穩定也會導致機組故障。風力發電機組大都處于電網末端，接入到35千伏和110千伏的電路，如果電網的三線電壓不平衡，電壓過高或過低，都會影響風力發電機組的運行，當電網三相不平誤差超過5%，電壓誤差達到上下10%時，機組會停止運行。
